An eye-catching unbeaten run has propelled Fulham into contention for a top-two finish in the Championship and promotion to the Premier League come summer. They have a chance of winning the title but to achieve that the London club must hold their consistency.
Cottagers on the title trail
13 points from a possible 15 lifted Fulham to within a touching distance of the automatic promotion places. The least followers of The Cottagers can expect this term is an extended season, but they will be desperate to avoid the lottery of playoff football and finish first or second. At this stage, that is still very much within their grasp.
To give themselves the best chance of landing gold or silver this season, Fulham must continue their solid form, winning their home matches and picking up points on their travels. The hosts banked what was their 16th win of the season last weekend when beating Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park, sneaking through thanks to a 1-0 scoreline.
A tight match was expected and that’s exactly what we got. Aleksandar Mitrovic scored the only goal of the game when bulging the net on 65 minutes to settle what had been a fiercely competitive contest. 1-0 is usually a nervy lead but Fulham were able to hang on for the result.
Barnsley’s battling point
While their opponents have been fighting for promotion, Barnsley fans have been watching their side struggle for points at the wrong end of the charts. They failed to win 26 of their first 31 games and stumbled to a 16th defeat of the season last time. -20 in the goal difference tally tells the story of how their season is going.
They lost three games on the bounce recently before arresting that slump with a hard-earned draw at home to Sheffield Wednesday last time. That was a match they were expected to lose but credit is given when its due and Barnsley worked hard for their point that day, playing their part in what was an entertaining 1-1 share.
Windass put The Owls ahead inside 16 minutes but that advantage was cut out when Woodrow hit home a quickfire equaliser. Both teams had chances to win the match but, at the final whistle, there could be no arguments over the result. Neither side deserved to lose that day.
Fulham vs Barnsley prediction
This is a match involving one team pushing for promotion – with an outside chance of winning the title – and one fighting for their lives as they battle to beat relegation. Much of the division stands between the pair and that should reflect in the final score.
Fulham have the confidence to burn, are the more confident side and enjoy home advantage. That suggests the locals have a great chance of collecting a home win and another three points. Sure to be popular in weekend accumulators.
Championship odds prediction
No surprise to see Fulham have been chalked up as favourites with 11/20 offered against the 95/20 of Barnsley. Expect the visitors to get themselves another point? The level finish is 31/10.
