Last season’s Premier League champions begin the defence of their trophy with a home match against recently promoted Leeds United. The Reds take on the Peacocks at Anfield from 17:30 GMT in the highlight of Saturday’s programme. Will the home team pick up where they left off and bag all three points?
- Fulham vs Arsenal Prediction for September 12
Saturday’s top-of-the-bill match will be the first game involving Liverpool and Leeds since the pair met in the EFL Cup in the latter part of 2016 and the first league encounter for more than 16 years. The stats support the home side with Leeds without a victory against Liverpool since 2001. Will that painful wait rumble on for visiting fans or can they secure a memorable victory at the home of the Premier League champions?
Klopp capable of dominating
Jurgen Klopp took his side from Champions League winners to owners of the Premier League in little over a year and fans believe the German has the tools at his disposal to go on to dominate English football. The manner in which Liverpool stopped Manchester City claiming three league titles in-a-row means its fair to assume the Reds could go on to do something similar again this season although the Cityzens have been spending cash in an attempt to wrestle the trophy back.
Liverpool should be fitter and faster than their opponents after benefiting from a Community Shield game against last season’s FA Cup winners Arsenal at Wembley a fortnight ago. They lost that match on penalties after playing out a 1-1 draw with the Gunners but returned to winning ways when hammering Blackpool 7-2 in a friendly last Saturday.
Leeds promoted as champions
Leeds United fans have been forced to watch the Premier League from the outside as their side stumbled from one failed promotion bid to the next in recent seasons. That painful sequence came to an end this summer when the Peacocks finally secured their place back in the Premier League, gaining promotion as winners of the Championship when leaving West Brom and the chasing pack trailing in their wake.
The visiting side signed off with a stunning 4-0 win over Charlton Athletic at Elland Road on 22 July. That was their last competitive outing, but they must hit the ground running this term if they are to stand any chance of getting at least a point from Anfield. It’s a tough opening fixture for Leeds but they know there will be no easy games in the months ahead.
Liverpool vs Leeds prediction
Liverpool are the Premier League champions and start the new season as the home team against an opponent that was playing in the league below just a few months ago. The Reds have been active in the summer transfer window and their best should be good enough to see them bag three points.
Leeds United know the fixture list couldn’t have been any tougher on them but they travel to Anfield with confidence in the camp following last season’s title win. They will be organised, hard to break down, and won’t give a second thought to the reputation of their opponents.
Premier League odds
Liverpool are 1/4 favourites in the match betting with Leeds trading at 9/1. The draw is 535/100.
