Ralph Hasenhuttl steadied the ship after a disastrous start of the season and Southampton now look safe in their cosy Premier League spot. However, a big test is coming up because Sean Dyche and his men are riding into town.
The positive turnaround at Saint Mary’s
The Saints are sitting at 13th, seven points ahead of the 18th-placed West Ham United. Danny Ings isn’t stopping no matter what - the English striker scored 14 Premier League goals, as well as finding the net against Tottenham, in an FA Cup clash that the Spurs won 3-2, but many felt like Southampton deserved to go through.
Even though Southampton conceded 46 goals so far, nine of those came in a low point against Leicester with a 9-0 loss, but the recovery ever since has been remarkable and the most tested part of the team against Burnley will be the attacking line. Looking at these two teams’ first seasonal matchup won’t tell you much, because even though Burnley dominated in a 3-0 win, this Southampton team has gone a long way since.
Same old Burnley
Burnley are just being themselves this season. The “big” clubs despise them for their rough style of play, but Sean Dyche couldn’t care less because the old school of English football keeps them safely in the middle of the table. Even though they are often labelled as a destructive defensive side, the Clarets are scoring more than a goal per match on average.
Chris Wood found his form this season, finding the net 10 times, four more than Ashley Barnes who stands at six.
The latest draw to Arsenal is a cause for optimism, enhanced by two big wins in succession previously versus Leicester and Manchester United. Perhaps the only stain in the recent performances is the FA Cup loss to Norwich, but the Premier League is healing their wounds successfully.
Southampton vs Burnley Prediction
A point worth noting ahead of this clash is Southampton’s awful home streak this season. Even though they look good overall, the Saints are the worst home side in 2019/20. Perhaps this is due to their inability to continuously break down defences, a trait perfectly suited for Burnley’s counter-attacks. Dyche’s players took only three wins in 12 outings away from home, but this match could add to their tally of success.
It could be a long, cold night at St. Mary’s and don’t be surprised if the guests snatch the win here.
EPL Betting Odds
The odds sway in the hosts' favour. Their odds are 3/4, while the guests are at 365/100 and the draw is at 13/5.
