Football fans have Champions League and Europa League fixtures to pick through this midweek but there is a game from the Scottish Premiership that will be of interest to followers of the division. St Mirren host Celtic in Paisley from 19:45 GMT with the Hoops eager to bank all three points and keep the pressure on current leaders Rangers.
- Leeds vs Hull Prediction for September 16
Lack of goals a concern for Saints
St Mirren started the season well and gave supporters reason to be confident for the campaign ahead, but the Saints have dropped off the pace in recent weeks, tumbling to seventh in the table. A top six finish would be the club’s goal for the 2020/21 season, but pundits expect them to struggle down in the bottom six, fighting desperately against relegation to the Championship.
The home team enter this match with their stats showing two wins and one draw against three defeats, scoring three goals but conceding eight. They have seven points on the board which has them level with St Johnstone in sixth, but they are the joint-lowest scorers in the division.
Celts put five past County
Celtic are placed third in the Scottish Premiership and are six points behind leaders Rangers but the Bhoys do have two games in hand over the light blues and will fancy their chances of getting themselves back on level terms before pulling clear of the chasing pack. Neil Lennon’s side are unbeaten so far, winning four and drawing one of their previous five matches.
They were last seen in action hammering Ross County 5-0 in Dingwall on Saturday afternoon in what was a real show of strength. Edouard broke the deadlock inside four minutes before Ajeti, Duffy, Ajer and Klimala added goals to wrap up the points.
St Mirren v Celtic prediction
Celtic will be aware of the defensive frailties of their opponents and they travel to Paisley in high spirits after scoring five goals at the weekend, taking their season tally to 15 so far. The visiting side know the pressure is on them to win the points and keep breathing down the necks of Rangers, but they are good enough to get the desired result.
Scottish Premiership odds
St Mirren are 61/4 to win at home with victory for Celtic available at 2/13 with 22bet. The draw has been marked up as a 13/2 option.
